Job Description
The Firefighter position works as a member of a crew to provide effective response to a variety of emergencies. The Firefighter also maintains and operates an assortment of equipment required to mitigate emergencies. The Firefighter operates under the supervision of a Fire Captain but must be able to operate with limited supervision depending on circumstances and will be assigned functions that require the Firefighter to exercise significant responsibility.
General Duties and Responsibilities (Not an inclusive list):
Responds to fire emergencies and performs fire ground operations as part of an emergency response crew.
Responds to emergency rescue incidents and performs rescue operations.
May respond to hazardous materials incidents and performs operations to mitigate and control the incident.
Responds to medical emergencies and performs emergency patient care.
Operates and maintains fire apparatus, fire fighting and rescue equipment.
Performs station duties to ensure that stations are clean and support the operation of the fire department.
Performs public fire safety education and public education activities and participates in fire safety inspections.
Performs administrative duties.
Maintains professional competency.
Job Requirements
Qualifications Required:
NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Level I and II certified education and training program from an accredited institution
Valid Certificates from the Ontario Fire Administration Candidate Testing Program for Stages One, Two, Three and Swim test at time of application www.ofai.ca
Must be at least 18 years of age
Be legally entitled to work in Canada (must be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, landed immigrant, or hold a valid work permit)
Must be able to understand and communicate clearly in verbal and written English
Must have completed a minimum of grade 12 or equivalent as approved by the Ministry of Education
Must have NO criminal record unless a pardon has been granted under the Criminal Record Act of Canada and has not been revoked
Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers License Class "D" with "Z" endorsement at the time of application
Possess a Standard First Aid certificate (minimum) or equivalent, maintained current throughout the recruitment process
Possess a valid Basic Rescuer or Level “C” CPR certificate (minimum) or equivalent, maintained throughout the recruitment process
Have prescribed 20/30, or better, uncorrected vision in each eye without corrective lenses, with colour vision, depth perception and peripheral vision that is safe for fire fighters.
Have prescribed normal unaided hearing – hearing thresholds no greater than 30 decibels in each ear at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz, and no significant loss in higher frequencies
Availability to work shifts that may vary (days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays). Ability to work extended hours when required as a result of emergency responses; Ability to work 24-hour shift schedule.

Trade apprenticeship or certification
Working experience
Additional Medical training or experience (i.e. paramedic, nursing)
Other relevant training, qualifications or experience
Demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement

Vulnerable Sector Screening clearance issued by the RCMP or your local police service, issued within 6 month period prior to date of application

Phase 1 – Successful completion of the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. Candidate Testing Services (OFAI-CTS) Stages one, two and three, at the time of application
Phase 2 – Application via Town of Newmarket’s online application system - October 15, 2024 to November 1, 2024. (closes 4:00 p.m.)
Phase 3 – Review of applications - November 4, 2024 to November 22, 2024
Phase 4 – CYFS specific Skills Testing – December 9 to December 13, 2024 (Invites to candidates to be sent out by November 27, 2024)
Phase 5 – Interviews - January 7 to January 17, 2025 (Invites to candidates to be sent out by December 23, 2024) Candidates selected for an interview must possess a valid Ontario Drivers License Class “D” with “Z” endorsement and will be required to complete and pass the OFAI-CTS Swim Test and provide valid swim test certificates by January 17, 2025.
Phase 6 – Psychometric Testing – January 22 to February 7, 2025
Phase 7 – Reference Checks – February 10 to February 21, 2025
Phase 8 – Conditional Offers - February 24 to February 28, 2025
Phase 9 – Probationary Firefighters Training Class – April 7, 2025 (to be confirmed)
