Position Summary

  • Firefighters will be responsible for all fire suppression activities that are necessary to save life and property.

  • Immediately respond to fire, medical, rescue and other emergency and non-emergency related calls as required.

  • Combat, extinguish and/or prevent fires by rapidly and efficiently performing these varied duties as required under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable hazards.

  • Provide emergency medical response and aid.

  • Perform rescue/extrication operations where necessary to prevent loss of life or further injury, from any cause.

  • Drive and/or operate any equipment, apparatus and vehicles in accordance with applicable policy and the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

  • Participate in fire safety, fire prevention, public education and public relations duties.

  • Follow instructions and orders from Officers in action, maintenance and training situations.

  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent in education. ***proof of required documentation to be presented and verified at the physical testing stage***

  • Prior work experience in fire suppression, trades, emergency medical response, fire prevention, etc. would be considered a strong asset.

  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II certification required. ***proof of required documentation to be presented and verified at the physical testing stage***

  • Possession of a valid Class “DZ” driver’s license (or out-of-province equivalency) and a satisfactory driving record (0 demerit points) is required. ***a valid driving abstract will be run at the time of interview***

  • Valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate is required. ***proof of required documentation to be presented and verified at the physical testing stage***

  • Must be able to successfully pass the OFC swim/tread test.

  • Meet the prescribed visual requirements (20/40 in each eye WITHOUT corrective lenses and colour vision safe for firefighting).

  • Must be able to adhere to NFPA hearing standards and respond to verbally transmitted instructions over radio.

  • Speak, read and write English fluently, and communicate clearly and precisely under demanding, high-pressure situations.

  • Able to perform the essential duties of the job safely under intense and sustained physical efforts.

  • Obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check, including Vulnerable Sector, at time of employment, and not have a criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted.

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

  • Available to work twenty four (24) hour rotating shifts including nights, weekends and statutory holidays.

  • Able to handle intense and sustained physical effort in high risk situations to safely perform the duties of a Firefighter in a team environment.

  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces as required.

  • Ability to interact constructively with co-workers, superiors and members of the public.

  • Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.

  • Ability to accept change and strive for excellence in customer service.

  • Responsible for station maintenance and upkeep of firefighting equipment and fire department property.

  • Responsible for upgrading and maintaining skills/knowledge and physical requirements to current standards.

  • Experience in coaching, counseling or public education is considered an asset.
