Position Purpose:
Full-time firefighters are responsible to suppress fires, deal with dangerous goods emergencies, perform rescue work, administer emergency medical aid, and assist with fire prevention activities. Firefighters operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment including maintenance of the fire stations.

Responsibilities:
Following the chain of command and under the general direction and direct supervision of a fire suppression captain, the general duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Operate and maintain fire apparatus
Maintain fire equipment
Perform fire ground operations
Perform hazardous material operations
Perform rescue operations including auto extrication and water rescue
Provide emergency medical care
Develop pre-incident plans
Perform public education and inspections
Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development
Perform administrative duties
Perform station and grounds maintenance duties
Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned
Essential Qualifications:
Minimum of 18 years of age at time of application
Legally entitled to work in Canada
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
Previous or current volunteer, paid on call, or career suppression firefighter experience
Possess a valid Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement with less than 4 demerit points (driver’s abstract must be submitted as a condition of employment)
Possess a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification (proof of Pro Board Seal or IFSAC)
Possess a NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC seal required)
Ability to work 24 hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends and holidays etc.) Note: the rotating shift pattern may be adjusted during the first year of employment.
Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or Emergency Fire Responder (EFR) certification
Communicate clearly and effectively in English (verbal and written)
Successful completion of fitness and medical testing – York University
Ability to swim proficiently – Ontario Fire College Surface Water Rescue / Ice Rescue Swim Test (conducted by WSFES)
Ability to work at heights, inside confined spaces and to wear and use supplied safety equipment
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a post-secondary education degree or diploma in a related field
Additional NFPA courses and/or certifications related to the position of suppression firefighter
Advanced medical training
NFPA 1002 Pump Operations
This full-time position is subject to a 12-month probationary period. Salary as per the current collective agreement (2022).
