AIRPORT FIRE FIGHTER

The Ottawa International Airport Authority is accepting applications for a Airport Fire Fighter  position.

Reporting to the Captain, the successful candidate will be a member of the OIAA’s Airport Fire Services team, which operates in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Responds to emergency situations according to the regulatory requirements of the CARs;

  • Participates in the development of tactical operations at all emergency situations;

  • Participates in operations as required by the Fire Captain;

  • Displays teamwork and a desire for learning and advancement;

  • Plays an active role in the preservation of life, property, and environment;

  • Prevents, extinguishes and protects exposures from fire loss;

  • Administers advanced first aid and CPR/defibrillation;

  • Participates in fire suppressions operations;

  • Participates in salvage and overhaul operations after a fire has been extinguished;

  • Participates in the research on technological change and evaluates programs and procedures relating to operations and equipment; and

  • Participates in airport community education and public relations as required..

The successful candidate must :

  • Be able to participate in and successfully complete an Airport Fire Fighter qualifying program, NFPA 1003 Standard.

  • Have excellent analytical and situational awareness skills accompanied by a good sense of judgment. 

  • Be conscientious and dependable, must be able to work within a team environment, positively interact with a diverse work environment and be willing to perform any task assigned. 

  • Be able to take initiative and able to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Have customer service skills to assist all members of the public.

  • Successfully complete a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or have documented proof of successfully completed a CPAT, or equivalent (military firefighter annual test), within the last twelve (12) months.

  • Be in possession of an Ontario Provincial Driver’s Licence Class DZ or Class 3, or the equivalent from another province, along with a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month).

  • Provide a copy of International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard certificates at time of application.

These abilities, combined with a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada;

  • Obtained their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or academic equivalent diploma (document required);

  • Successful completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level 1 & 2;

  • Qualified to NFPA 1072 (472) Operations level;

  • Valid Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level Health Care Providers (HCP) / Basic Life Support (BLS) certificates  (supporting documentation required);

  • Commitment to personal and professional development and in continuing training and education through ongoing learning;

  • Demonstrated initiative, autonomy, positive attitude and a sense of responsibility;

  • Demonstrated mental alertness and mechanical aptitude;

  • Must be fit and able to handle the physical, emotional, and mental effort required to perform duties of this position;

  • Computer and technology skills to report completion and development, training, as well as technology use during emergencies; and

  • Effective communication skills (written, reading and verbal) in English..

ASSETS :

  • Qualified to NFPA 1003;

  • Qualified to NFPA 1002;

  • Qualified to NFPA 1041;

  • Qualified to NFPA 1021Level 1;

  • Emergency Medical Responder certification;

  • Other relevant specialized training, qualifications, or experience;

  • Demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement;

  • Current annual live fire certification as per the regulatory requirements of the CARs; and

  • Bilingualism (English and French).

ABOUT THE POSITION :

Salary

$109,279 per year in accordance with the current Collective Agreement (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025 rates).

Note: New recruits shall be remunerated as follows:

i) 70% for the first six (6) months;
ii) 80% for the next six (6) months;
iii) 90% for the following twelve (12) months

Job requirements

  • Provide a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month)

  • Successfully obtain:

    • A security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC);

    • Airport’s Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP – D) within 90 days of hire.

    • Restricted Radio Operator’s Certificate within 90 days of hire.
