The Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) Team in a growing municipality is an all hazards fire department that responds to all types of emergencies including high risk, water/ice rescue, confined space, hazardous materials to name a few. There is also the opportunity to meet the community to help with public education events and provide our Fire and life safety messaging.

New hires upon successful completion of training will be assigned to the operations section and work out of one of the City's fire stations, or any other section as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Here's What You Get to do:
• Provide exceptional customer service as a respected member of the community
• Respond to all emergencies when called upon including, but not limited to:
- Medical – provide patient care, administer medical aid, CPR, defibrillation, symptom assist
- Firefighting – deploy hose lines, operate firefighting equipment, use hand and power tools, operating emergency vehicles and pump operations.
- Rescue – search and rescue, remove injured persons from dangerous environments
- Special Operations – vehicle rescue, hazardous materials response, water and ice rescue, rope rescue, elevator rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, machine rescue
• Apparatus and station maintenance
• Public Education – Participate in the delivery of education programs and attend public events to promote fire safety awareness and responsibilities
• Fire Prevention – Assess all buildings for compliance with fire and life safety requirements. Conduct preplans, familiarization and tactical site assessments
• Provide assistance in a vast array of non-emergency situations
• Participate in continuous training and learning to advance your knowledge and skill
• Work in accordance with the provisions of all applicable laws and regulations and all City of Mississauga corporate and departmental policies and procedures.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Here's What You Bring to the Table:
• Minimum of 18 years of age or older at time of application
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
• Possess a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I & II certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC required)
• Possess a NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification (including Mission Specific PPE and Mission Specific Product Control) certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC required)
• Possess a valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification
• Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement or equivalent (deemed equivalent by Ontario Ministry of Transportation) at time of application, and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga
• Criminal Record Search – Candidates must provide a Level 3 (Vulnerable Sector Screening) that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga at the candidate’s expense. The document must be obtained from the Police Service where the candidate resides and dated no earlier than 6 months from the conditional offer of employment.
• Successful completion of but not limited to a written test, behaviour / competency based interviews, a medical assessment, practical assessments, behavioral assessments, York University Firefighter fitness assessment (scheduled by the City of Mississauga), psychometric assessment, swim assessment and reference and background checks.
• Effective English communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and precisely in multiple situations
• Excellent hearing ability without the use of artificial aids
• Ability to swim proficiently (must pass the swim assessment )
• Candidates must meet the vision requirements of NFPA 1582 which includes visual acuity, colour vision, binocular vision, peripheral vision and ocular health.
• Uncorrected vision acuity of 20/30 in each eye.
• Sufficient colour perception to safely perform all essential job tasks (NFPA 1582). Individuals with abnormal colour perceptions i.e; red, green deficiency may meet the colour vision requirement. Individuals with monochromatic do not meet the standard.
• Ability to handle intense and sustained physical effort necessary to safely perform firefighting duties
• Willingness to work 24 hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends, holidays etc.)
• Act with integrity, solve complex problems, drive continuous improvement and provide excellent customer service
• Accept direction, work in a team environment, establish and maintain relationships and show caring and empathy towards others
• Maintain confidence and composure during stressful or traumatic situations
• Possess skills and strategies for managing the impacts of stress and maintaining work life balance

ASSETS
• College diploma or university degree in any discipline recognized by an accredited association, organization or institution
• Trade apprenticeship certification or minimum of one year experience in skilled trades in any discipline recognized as a skilled trade in Ontario
• Previous experience of minimum one year as a volunteer, part-time or full-time firefighter may be considered.
• Previous experience of minimum one year in emergency services other than fire, operating large vehicle and/or heavy vehicle / machinery operation, fire prevention, military or coast guard
• Previous experience of minimum one year as an elevator technician, fire alarm technician and/or life safety technician
• Possess National Lifeguard Services (NLS) certification
• Fluent in a second language other than English and French
• Occupational Health and Safety related training and certification (ex. JHSC part 1 and 2)
• Ski patrol or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
• Experience in customer service and/or public service roles
• Experience competing at the Provincial, National or Professional level as an athlete
• Volunteer, humanitarian and/or community involvement experience of minimum one year in habitat for humanity, global medic, global fire or FF without borders
• Previous experience or training in technical rescue training in water, ice, trench, rope rescue, confined space rescue covered under NFPA 1006
• Minimum 1 year HAZMAT removal or private disaster management (ie; chemical spills, environmental clean up, mould, asbestos, bio hazard, contamination clean up)
RECRUITMENT PROCESS
A non-refundable administration fee of $75 +tax is required for ALL external candidates applying to the Firefighter position. Payment is required prior to application submission. As part of the application process, applicants will be invited to complete a self-identification survey. The survey is voluntary. The information collected will be considered strictly confidential, but not anonymous, and will be accessible to designated Human Resources staff solely for the purposes of: removing employment barriers; striving to ensure a diverse workforce; monitoring and reporting of gaps and trends; and informing outreach strategies. Firefighter Recruitment Process
Step 1 : Submitting Application

Step 2: Application Screening
Human Resources and the Hiring Committee will review your application.

Step 3: Assessments
The interview panel will consist of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and/or Human Resources personnel.
Successful completion of but not limited to a written test, a medical assessment, practical assessments, behavioral assessments, York University Firefighter fitness assessment (scheduled by the City of Mississauga), performance assessments and swimming tests including reference and background checks. Assessments and evaluations will be based on job-related criteria.
Selected candidates will be responsible to pay any fees associated with application, testing and assessments throughout the recruitment and selection process. (Administration fee $75 +tax, approximately $70 for the written test, and approximately $500 for physical and/or medical assessments).

A conditional offer of employment will be made to the successful candidate(s) as a probationary firefighter.
Offers of employment are conditional upon:
Maintaining a valid Ontario D Class License with Z Endorsement, and a drivers abstract that is acceptable to the City.
Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3), at candidates own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
Successful completion of the training period.
Successful completion of a twelve-month probationary period.
Step 6: Getting Started
We have a comprehensive onboarding program to welcome you to the City and prepare you for your first day.
You will participate in a seventeen-week Probationary Firefighter training program that follows the competencies of NFPA 1001, NFPA 472/1072, NFPA 1035, NFPA 1006 (core).
